Places of work of Hasiru Dala

Hasiru Dala started its work from Bengaluru. Now we are located in around a dozen places spread across three states of South India.

Bengaluru

The metropolitan city of Bengaluru is the largest city in South India having an estimated population of 12-13 million people. It is estimated that more than 25,000 waste pickers are in Bengaluru who actively collaborate with the local body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)

Mysuru

The organisation spread to the historical city of palaces in the year of 2016. The city has over 300 waste picker families and the nearby Nanjanagud has around 150 families. They are actively working with the local urban body Mysuru Municipal Corporation.

Mangaluru

The coastal port city of Mangaluru is located between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats mountain range. It is the only city in Karnataka to have all four modes of transport—air, road, rail and sea. Tumakuru

The city of Tumakuru is located at a distance of 70 kms from the city of Bengaluru. The city is home to about half million people. Hasiru Dala has been working in the city of Tumakuru since 2016 and has now expanded to SiRA, Krishnagiri and Nelamangala.

Hubbali - Dharwad

In North Western Karnataka, there are the twin cities of Hubli and Dharward. The city is officially known as Huballi and lies 484 kms from Bengaluru having an estimated population of a million residents. Hasiru Dala has been working actively in this important north western city since 2019. It is estimated that there are more than 1000 waste picker families

Davanagere

The city of Davanagere is the seventh largest city in the state of Karnataka, and the administrative headquarters of eponymous Davanagere district. The city has a population of half about half a million and is located in the north west of Bengaluru at a distance of 265 Kms. The organisation has been working in the city of Davanagere actively since 2017. It is estimated that over 1000 waste picker families reside in Davanagere.

Chamarajanagar

Chamarajanagar is the southernmost district in the state of Karnataka. The town has an estimated population of seventy thousand residents and is located 180 kms south of Bengaluru. The organisation has been operational in this small town since 2017. In addition, the organization is working in Gundalpet and exploring working in Kollegala. It is estimated that there are over 500 waste picker families in this cluster.

Kodagu (Coorg)

The town is also known as Kodagu is famous for coffee cultivation and has an estimated population of 35,000 people. Hasiru Dala spread its operational work to Kodagu (Coorg) in 2017.

Coimbatore

The city of Coimbatore is also called the “Manchester of South India” due to its extensive textile industry, fed by the surrounding cotton fields. The city has a population of 1.6 million people and is located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu some 365 kms away from the city of Bengaluru. Hasiru Dala has been working in this emerging industrial city since 2019.

Trichy

The city of Tiruchirappalli (also called Tiruchi or Trichy) is an ancient city in Tamil Nadu. The city is famous for its historical and ancient temples. The city has an estimated population of one million andHasiru Dala has been working here since 2018. Hasiru Dala is enumerating different categories of waste workers in the city. It is estimated that more than 3,000 families are engaged in sanitation work including waste pickers.

The town has a population of 55,000 and is the district headquarters of the newly created Chikkaballapur district in the state of Karnataka. Hasiru Dala spread its operational work to this district in 2018 and has been actively working since then.

The city of Rajahmundry is a city on the eastern banks of the Godavari River, in Andhra Pradesh. Hasiru Dala has been working in this city since 2019. It is estimated that more than 1500 waste pickers live in the city.
