Our Approach : Invisibility to Identity

At Hasiru Dala, we believe in the power of community to bring change. With this approach, we believe that it is the community’s knowledge and leadership that facilitates transformation and brings systematic change.

Action research about waste pickers and solid waste management has built a scientific temperament in our approach that is based on data analysed from the ground.  Strategies on implementation are co-created with the waste pickers. Collaboration with other like-minded organisations at the local, state, national, and global level has fueled Hasiru Dala’s advocacy efforts, resulting in tremendous change in the rights and lives of waste pickers. Working with citizens, activists and environmentalists has helped in actualisation of inclusion of waste pickers into the solid waste management frameworks of multiple cities.

Our Vision of Success

Hasiru Dala hopes to bring waste workers out of the shadows, into the light. We approach our vision of success with a day in mind, in a decade or so, when our work in its current form will be irrelevant. Waste pickers would have achieved social equity and economic mobility and a new vision and challenge will steer the organisation.

Empathy

Empathy is central to our work. It helps us to identify ourselves with others, especially with the marginalised, without any judgment and pre-conceived notions.

Inclusiveness

Hasiru Dala believes in inclusiveness and welcomes people from all walks of life. Discrimination on the base of caste, class, religion, gender, sexuality, age is not allowed in the organisation. All are considered equal.

Non-Judgemental Attitude

Hasiru Dala encourages non-judgmental attitude i.e. we all form judgments in everyday lives but ensuring that they aren’t reflected in our work and in our behavior towards co-workers is encouraged.

Participatory Decision Making

Hasiru Dala prefers to involve all the relevant stakeholders in the process of decision making.

Commitment

The working hours have been kept largely flexible. In Hasiru Dala we believe the employees are individually responsible to themselves as well as the organization. The commitment to the cause is must- keeping in mind that freedom brings more responsibilities.

Non-Violence

Hasiru Dala adheres to the principle of non-violence and doesn’t encourage any form of violence. If an employee is found to be engaged in any violent act, a strict action against the same will be taken.

Respect

Hasiru Dala believes in equality for all. No “Sir/Madam” is required in the workplace. That adds an additional responsibility of one respecting the other irrespective of caste, class, age, religious, gender, sexuality differences.
