As a continuation of our Netravati Abhiyan, around 33 tonnes of garbage piled under the bridge were lifted up with the cooperation of the Municipal Corporation, various organizations, school and college students, and the public. About 17 tons of garbage was removed and cleaned from Adyar National Highway. Today, 99% of littering has been reduced in these areas.

A Number of beach cleaning programs have been organised at Mangalore beaches. The participating volunteers are taught to sort the collected garbage, which is sent to a recycling plant.

A clean-up drive was organised along the Phalguni River, and the collected waste was lifted out and sent for recycling. HasiruDala also participated in Swachha Sagar Surakshitha Sagar cleanup drive, as part of the Central government Abhiyan.

Impact

• Legacy waste of 33 tons under the bridge was cleared; 17 tons of waste was cleared from Adyar National Highway in a period of 4 weeks
• The campaign ran for a year, from 6 am to 0:30 am every day on the spot
• Citizen vigilance caught a person who was throwing waste into the river, resulting in a court case. Their vehicle was seized, and they were fined Rs. 10,000
• Forty awareness boards were put up along the Netravati bridge with the aim of preventing plastic from entering the sea.
• The boards were in collaboration with Mangalore Municipal Corporation
• 99% of the littering in this place is stopped

In order to prevent plastic from entering the river and sea through open drainage, in collaboration with Plastic Fisher who provided the equipment and technical knowledge, a barrier called “trash boom” was put up on 4 drains in Mangaluru. The plastics collected here are sorted, dried, and sent for recycling.

With the aim of making people aware of solid waste management, waste sorting, and the dangers of plastic in water bodies, we have organised programs for school and college students, associations, and village panchayats through an information education program called “Kasa Prasanga”.
